Compost

All seven of our licensed compost sites produce compost to BSI PAS 100 and the Compost Quality Protocol specification.  This is the public accredited specification for composted materials developed by WRAP in conjunction  with the Association for Organics Recycling (AFOR).  The advantage of PAS100 and Quality Protocol assured products is that they are no longer considered a waste and can be spread straight to land, avoiding costly spreading exemption charges.

10mm Soil Improver

Our 10mm compost is produced to the BSI PAS 100 specification and is therefore safe, reliable and consistent and can be used in a number of landscape applications, including:

  • Soil improvement and manufacture
  • Brownfield regeneration schemes
  • Bioremediation
  • Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)
  • Green roofs
  • Parks and gardens
  • Erosion control
  • Flood alleviation

This product is extremely versatile and can improve the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of your soil.  Not only does the compost reduce the need for inorganic fertilizers, it helps the soil retain moisture, prevents erosion and weeds when used as a mulch and contains valuable micro-organisms.  Our 10mm Soil Improver is made from composted biodegradable materials and is accredited to PAS100:2005 - 2011 and the Compost Quality Protocol.  Our products are certified by Organic Farmers & Growers under the Evaluation Scheme, which allows organic growers and farmers to use this material in organic systems under derogation.

10mm compost is available in bulk from our Haynes and Faldo Compost Sites in Bedfordshire and our Lowick Compost Site in Northamptonshire.  Our 10mm product is bagged and is available by contacting Caroline on 01449 722318, or email caroline@material-change.com.

25mm Mulch

Our 25mm Mulch is suitable for suppressing weeds and adding structure to your soil.  This product has not been accredited under PAS100 as we only produce small quantities of this material, but is accredited under the Organic Farmers & Growers Evaluation Scheme. This product is available by prior arrangement only.

40mm Soil Improver

Our 40mm soil improver is produced to the BSI PAS 100 specification and is therefore safe, reliable and consistent, ideal for farm application and has many benefits:

  • Increases organic matter in the soil which studies show improves maximum yield potential
  • Offers slow release of major crop nutrients including phosphate, potash, magnesium and sulphur
  • Improves soil structure for better workability and better crop establishment
  • Increases water infiltration and retention
  • The organic action of compost can help to inhibit pests and diseases within the soil
  • Complements and can enhance the performance of inorganic fertilisers, reducing the overall quantity needed - better for your pocket and the environment
  • Financial benefits.  The cost of spreading compost is about £2.50-£3.00 per tonne. These costs can be recovered from the nutritional value that compost delivers.
  • Potentially higher yields - compost improves soil structure and fertility,  increasing a crop’s yield potential
  • Compost can pay for itself - compost’s short and long-term contributions to soil fertility make it very cost effective
  • Reduced watering - compost acts like a sponge, retaining water and releasing it for crop growth
  • Fuel savings and traffic tolerance - compost improves the structure of the soil allowing machines to work it with less effort.   Compaction of the soil by traffic and machinery is also less of an issue.

As our products are accredited, they are no longer classified as waste so you will not be required to apply for costly spreading exemptions through the Environment Agency. Our 40mm Soil Improver has been certified by Organic Farmers & Growers under the Evaluation Scheme, again allowing our material to be used under derogation.
