Evercreech AD expands low-carbon waste solutions with major gas-to-grid facility in Somerset
Shepton Mallet, Somerset — Evercreech AD, a 4.22-hectare anaerobic digestion plant located near Shepton Mallet, offers a scalable and sustainable approach to managing food and organic waste across commercial, industrial, and local authority sectors. Since becoming operational in September 2022, the site has been capable of processing up to 95,000 tonnes of waste annually while injecting as much as 1,000 cubic metres per hour of biomethane into the national gas grid—sufficient to supply heating for over 8,000 homes.
The facility is designed to handle a broad spectrum of feedstocks, including liquid, solid, semi-solid, packaged, and de-packaged organic waste. Its infrastructure features three pasteurisation units, a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, three primary digesters, two post-digesters, and a digestate storage tank, ensuring efficient, compliant treatment alongside effective energy recovery.
Evercreech AD demonstrates a practical and environmentally responsible solution for food producers and waste management companies seeking to divert organic waste from landfill. By converting varied waste streams into renewable biomethane and nutrient-rich digestate, the facility helps lower carbon emissions, supports circular economy principles, and provides a dependable source of renewable energy to the grid.
