Material change were invited to join Scarff’s Farm – Open Farm Sunday event on Sunday 9th June 2019.

Scarff’s Farm, located  in Combs – Suffolk, opened their gates to the public as part of the LEAF (Linking Environment And Farm) Open Farm Sunday.

Over 700 people came through the gates to view and take part in the farming activities. We were there on the day with our stand. It was lovely to speak with people about what we do and explain the composting process to them. Many people who use the Council’s green waste Brown Bin Scheme didn’t know that their brown bin contents end up with us at Creeting St Mary. We turn this green waste into compost through a natural process. Mr Scarff uses our Farm Grade compost on his land.

The brown ‘green waste’ bins (240L in size) are available for a small annual fee through your local council. You can have as many brown bins as you’d like. They are emptied every fortnight by your local council. If you would like to order a  brown ‘green waste’ bin, please contact Babergh and Mid Suffolk Council. For more information, please see their website.

The sun was shining and everyone wore a smile. We gave away over 150 Sunflower kits to the children. We encouraged the children to put their own soil improver into little bags for the sunflowers to grow in. We brought a bulk bag of our 0-12mm Soil improver. They were surprised at how warm the compost was! We provided them with pots, packs of seeds and a little growing instruction leaflet. We are hoping to be able to show some photos of their growing sunflowers with #igrewwithmaterialchange on social media.

It was a great day with lots to see and do, including a tractor ride round the Scarff Vineyard (you can see a previous blog on the the vineyard here), machinery demonstrations, seed companies, the Police, bee keeping, nature trail, wine tasting, fun facts, BBQ, refreshments and cakes!
